Sign from above for city club (From York Press)

A CHURCH has used the renaming of a refurbished York nightclub to put out its own message.

A poster outside St Edward’s Church on Tadcaster Road declares: “SALVATION… more than a nightclub.”

But the marketing people behind Club Salvation – formerly Nexus – in George Hudson Street reckon God moves in mysterious ways.

Following my earlier rant about Salvation - the club - placing a promotion outside The Salvation Army it’s good to see another York church getting in on the act. But it’s one of those eternal dilemmas. At what point are you just creating more promotion for the event you object to. Two sayings come to mind. Imitation is flattery and All publicity is good publicity

The fact still remains Salvation is not found in a Night Club.

RedEye | iPhone, Therefore I Blog

Normally, unless they are those pretty, puffy fair-weather ones, clouds aren’t so great. They’re dreary and stormy.

But Apple’s cloud is not only puffy and fair-weather, its the beginning of the companys beautiful future.

Is it just me noticing it more or is everyone waking up to the potential of The Cloud at the same time?

In The Cloud

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008

I’ve been talking about it for years - and what’s more other people have talked to me about it.
“The day will come when everything we use will be “out there” not on your hard drive. Data, applications, personal stuff all accessible from anywhere - anywhere with a connection that is.”
The iPhone - recently acquired with 3G connectivity - stores very little data. Ok it’s an iPod too and there’s 16Gb potential for tunes and movies - but the connectivity brings trillions of gigabytes to that small 640 px wide screen. (more…)

Q for iPhone in York

Originally uploaded by Dawnriser

I cycled down to the O2 shop in York this morning to see how many were
queuing outside. Here they are. The guy at the front came straight
here from his night out last night, the rest arrived from 5.30am
onwards.
I’m pretty sure the shop only has a dozen phones to sell when it opens
at 8:02 so those at the end of the line will be disappointed.
I went home for breakfast.

Press Article

Originally uploaded by Dawnriser

My sponsored ride has hit the local press in York. The story has been mainly culled from by blog so there’s nothing new in there. The Press hasn’t posted the article on their website so you can’t see it online.

There’s another sponsored cycle ride article on the same page. Brian Crosby, who is coincidentally another Riding Lights board member, was raising money for three other charities.
It’s the season for Riding Bikes.

There’s still plenty of time to donate to the Riding Lights fund. www.help.co.uk/ridingbike

Online ads to overtake TV in UK

Online ads to overtake TV

The internet will overtake TV as the biggest advertising platform in the UK this year with total ad spend of around £3.56bn, according to a report by Enders Analysis.

But does this mean it’s more effective? I think I would still rather have 30 seconds on peak time TV than the equivalent cost on t’internet. I confess I have no idea if I know what that would mean in web exposure, but TV still feels like you’re in lots of living rooms where it matters more than being on the “lean forwards” screen..

Hope Hero

Hope 08

I watched this film, Hope Hero by Jude Simpson, and I found it very moving. Lets put it this way, I needed a couple of tissues before it was through.

I think it’s the way it reminds me that being a Christian isn’t comfortable - neither is it for comfortable people. But it’s the hope it conveys for those who have no hope - if I’ll just get up and do something useful.

Apple announces a 3G iPhone and I can have one for nothing!

Apple United Kingdom - Press Releases
iPhone images

O2 and Apple today announced that the innovative iPhone 3G will be available in the UK and Ireland on July 11th. iPhone 3G combines all the revolutionary features of iPhone with 3G networking that is twice as fast as the first generation iPhone, built-in GPS for expanded location based mobile services, and iPhone 2.0 software …….

I bought an iPhone last year much to the derision of my brother who said I should have waited for the 3G model. Well I might have been a bit hasty - but at least O2 is offering me the upgrade to the new phone for nothing and if I want 16Gb of storage I can have it for a relatively small payment. Roll on July 11th …. built in GPS - mmmm

Speed up, life’s too short

BBC NEWS | Magazine | Speed up, life’s too short
Just as dieting makes you fat, time management courses make you inefficient.

An insight from Lucy Kellaway - a columnist in The FT - I have been known to take issue with her in the past. But this time I think she may be on to something - maybe.

The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian

The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian | Geekdad from Wired.com
Prince Caspian Movie PosterPrince Caspian, like the first Chronicles of Narnia, is visually stunning — from the locations where the movie was filmed, to the sets, to the costuming.  The actors and actresses, musical scores, and Aslans voice all contribute to the continuity.  The four Pevensie children have been back in London a year in the storyline, and while the younger two children have matured, you get the sense you’ve just left them at the end of the last movie.

The next film in the Chronicles of Narnia series is on it’s way to the UK. It arrives here next month. This guy liked it!

The Disney Site is a bit of fun too - I love the London Underground screen
