RedEye | iPhone, Therefore I Blog

Normally, unless they are those pretty, puffy fair-weather ones, clouds aren’t so great. They’re dreary and stormy.

But Apple’s cloud is not only puffy and fair-weather, its the beginning of the companys beautiful future.

Is it just me noticing it more or is everyone waking up to the potential of The Cloud at the same time?

In The Cloud

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008

I’ve been talking about it for years - and what’s more other people have talked to me about it.
“The day will come when everything we use will be “out there” not on your hard drive. Data, applications, personal stuff all accessible from anywhere - anywhere with a connection that is.”
The iPhone - recently acquired with 3G connectivity - stores very little data. Ok it’s an iPod too and there’s 16Gb potential for tunes and movies - but the connectivity brings trillions of gigabytes to that small 640 px wide screen. (more…)

www.cyclingnews.com - fitness and training information
fitness logoThere are only 3 motivating factors that change human behavior; pain, fear or ambition. Which button do you want to press?

This is the last thought in a long technical article about fitness and cycling. Well worth a read - skip over the technical terms if you don’t know what they mean - there’s a lot in there about attitude to fitness and exercise that applies more widely to human life even if you never mount a bike.

Q for iPhone in York

Originally uploaded by Dawnriser

I cycled down to the O2 shop in York this morning to see how many were
queuing outside. Here they are. The guy at the front came straight
here from his night out last night, the rest arrived from 5.30am
onwards.
I’m pretty sure the shop only has a dozen phones to sell when it opens
at 8:02 so those at the end of the line will be disappointed.
I went home for breakfast.

I’ve flown the route

Tuesday, July 1st, 2008

Call me a geek if you like, but I imported the route of my sponsored ride through the Yorkshire Dales, planned for next week, into Google Earth. So now I feel I’ve gained a whole new perspective on the roads I’ll be cycling to raise money for Riding Lights.

If you would like to fly with me click on the map below and then export it to a kml file. Double click the saved file and if you have Google Earth installed on your computer you see it traced out on the satellite image. Click play and start to fly. Watch the elevation read out under the map as you traverse the hills - just to gain some idea of where I’ll be feeling the pain. Click here to sponsor me

No cycling today

Originally uploaded by Dawnriser

It’s been a busy work day today so no cycle training. So here’s a
picture taken a couple of days ago on the road (actually just off the road) near Castle Howard.

The new thing is that I am sending this picture AND message from my phone. My brother reminded me that I could do this through Flickr.

So now I’ll be updating both pictures and text from the road during training and on the sponsored ride in July.

Spread Firefox | Download Day 2008

Firefox Download Day logoSpread Firefox | Download Day 2008
Sounds like a good deal, right? All you have to do is get Firefox 3 during Download Day to help set the record for most software downloads in 24 hours - it’s that easy. We’re not asking you to swallow a sword or to balance 30 spoons on your face, although that would be kind of awesome.

OK so I’m a confirmed Safari user but Firefox is my backup and it’s one in the eye for MS Explorer which I despise. The idea of pledging to do nothing except download the new version of Firefox is novel - but over 68,000 people in the UK have pledged. That’s more than 0.1% of the population. Kind of awesome ……

York station is free WiFi hotspot - Digital Lifestyle - Macworld UK
York railway station has been fitted-out with free WiFi for travellers, National Express East Coast announced today.

York Station

I love York station and now I have another excuse to go and watch the trains. “I needed to pick up my email, so I went for a coffee at the footbridge cafe.”

The iPhone deal just got even better

WWDC: O2 iPhone WiFi includes BT OpenZone, The Cloud - iPod/iPhone - Macworld UK
O2 logo

O2 has taken another step to widely improve its iPhone 3G offering in the UK, multiplying the available WiFi hotspots users can employ to get online.

Hidden in the small print on the O2 page, O2 confirms iPhone users will enjoy free use of WiFi hotspots from its existing partner, The Cloud, and also observes iPhone users will be able to use hotspots provided by BT OpenZone.

Even more free (or should I say bundled) WiFi with the O2 iPhone deal from July 11th.
