Warming to iMovie ‘09

Compiling a digital story

Compiling a digital story

I have just compiled a section of my tutorial story “Affected for Life” using iMovie ‘09. I’m warming to it.

I began this exercise because the free download of iMovie HD is no longer available from the Apple site and attempts to install it on a new MacBook brings up an error message because iMovie ‘08 has to be installed before the older HD version can be loaded. It doesn’t work if the computer is supplied with iLife ‘09. I can only assume this is because Apple think that the much improved ‘09 version should be enough for new Mac users.

[After some experimentation I found that by opening the iMovie HD installer package the app can extracted and dragged into the Applications folder as long as it's in a folder called iMovie (Older Version). But as the app is no longer officially available it will soon be time to move on to another editing application. Sadly I have to concede that version 6 HD of iMovie is in sharp decline.]

Hence my experiment with ‘09. It was easier because I had all the images to hand and it was simple to build the story in order from start to finish, but my head’s buzzing with possible solutions for those storytellers who hunt out their images as they go along. I think iMovie ‘09  will be made to work and ultimately may even be simpler – despite the lack of a timeline in the form that most digital storytellers have been used to using.

Time to rewrite those tutorials ……..

Some thoughts on things I’ve seen for June 23rd from 23:09 to 23:09:

  • BBC – Viewfinder: No more bright sunny days – The end of Kodachrome – a sad day. In this blog entry Phil Coombes captures something of the magic of using 35mm film – now all but lost in the millions of pixels captured with every shot.

Some thoughts on things I’ve seen for June 18th from 10:38 to 10:38:

  • Short films saved for posterity – I an similar move the digital stories made in the BBC English Regions project “Telling Lives” were handed to the National Media Museum In Bradford. Over 350 stories were told by BBC listeners and viewers in workshops held between 2003 and 2005. Many of them are still accessible on the BBC Website
I was exec producer of Telling Lives which ran in parallel with the BBC Capture Wales project. My teams were trained by the team in Wales with excellent results.

Some thoughts on things I’ve seen for June 16th from 20:46 to 20:46:

  • Department for Culture Media and Sport – final report – Digital Britain – the report. his will either open u[p a whole new range of opportunities for community based broadcasting – or it will be a shambles. Only time will tell. I fear that a 2015 deadline for digital switchover for radio is unrealistic. It fails to take in the impact on the listening habits of millions of radio listeners who have no intention of changing their receivers. It also fails on the resilience test. Analogue radio signals are better than current digital broadcasts in adverse conditions. Power consumption is an issue too. I have both digital and analogue digital receivers that power earpieces. The analogue runs for weeks on a AAA cell. The DAB rx has to be recharged every day.
More widespread use of broadband connections and improved training in its use is to be welcomed. I think digital storytelling has a big part to play here.
