Some thoughts on things I’ve seen for October 21st from 17:21 to 17:21:

  • Diego Goldberg :: The Arrow of Time – I find these family photo collection fascinating. The same day each year they photograph themselves. It reminds me of the film Dana Atchley used to show in Next Exit.

Culture Shock Stories online

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

cultureshock

Last year I trained several teams of digital storytellers who have since been running workshops for a project called Culture Shock. The first stories (over 200 of them) are now online. The site is smart and functional and well worth a visit.

The stories are, of course,  a fascinating insight into life in the North East as inspired by the museums collections in the region. All ages are represented from school children to some who are even older than me!

My congratulations to everyone involved in this project. They all worked hard in the Training Trainers workshop and they have clearly continued with dedication to pass their skills on to other storytellers.

Some thoughts on things I’ve seen for October 1st from 12:06 to 12:06:

  • Place-Based Digital Storytelling Modules – National Parks of America – As the latest Ken Burns series about National Parks hits the screens on PBS television in the USA a series of web tutorials about place based digital storytelling has been created by the the National Parks of America.
As an elementary introduction to Digital Storytelling this series of screen casts is excellent. Well worth a visit. My one comment would be that the example uses way too may zooms on the still images and some images are repeated too often – you only need to see a picture once. All the same, the site is a useful resource for anyone wanting to develop digital storytelling skills.

Another week in Dorset

Monday, September 14th, 2009

I’m working with East Dorset Arts again this week training trainers in Verwood. Excellent facilities at The Verwood Hub make working working there a pleasure. Great people too. So if you live in the East Dorset area look out for opportunities to join a digital storytelling workshop there soon.

Some thoughts on things I’ve seen for June 23rd from 23:09 to 23:09:

  • BBC – Viewfinder: No more bright sunny days – The end of Kodachrome – a sad day. In this blog entry Phil Coombes captures something of the magic of using 35mm film – now all but lost in the millions of pixels captured with every shot.

Some thoughts on things I’ve seen for June 18th from 10:38 to 10:38:

  • Short films saved for posterity – I an similar move the digital stories made in the BBC English Regions project “Telling Lives” were handed to the National Media Museum In Bradford. Over 350 stories were told by BBC listeners and viewers in workshops held between 2003 and 2005. Many of them are still accessible on the BBC Website
I was exec producer of Telling Lives which ran in parallel with the BBC Capture Wales project. My teams were trained by the team in Wales with excellent results.
