DS4 – Aberystwyth

Monday, April 20th, 2009

It’s time to enrol for the Digital Storytelling Festival in Aberystwyth. The date for this year is 17th June 2009 at the Arts Centre on the campus of the University of Wales. It’s always good value and if you’re travelling you can stay overnight on the campus for a very reasonable rate.
There’s more information here
Sadly I can’t be there this year as I’m running a workshop in Dorset on that date.

Final Cutters

A useful site for editors and storytellers using Apple’s Final Cut and to tempt you to visit there’s a software prize on offer too.

The workflow continues

Sunday, February 8th, 2009

I spent Friday morning in East Dorset explaining to a group of people in Wimborne Minster how digital storytelling works. These sessions do me as much good as the people I’m presenting to. Somehow it re-ignites my vision for the whole process, and as the group start to tell stories of their own I get a new sense of how many stories are waiting to be told.

So sometime this spring I shall be in Dorset Training Trainers to deliver workshops of their own.

And on Monday I am at the National Media Museum in Bradford to start a workshop for Broadcast Engineers. The weather’s not looking too kind at the moment (Sunday evening) but hopefully the train will take me there – and those participating.

Get iMovie HD while you can

Tuesday, January 27th, 2009

imovhdiconiLife ‘09 was released today. It was also the day that the free download page for iMovie HD 6 was removed.

Apple allowed users to download the earlier version because iMovie 08 was such a radical change  that many users were left without some essential functions – timeline editing to name just one.

I can only assume that because iMovie ‘09 has more functions Apple thinks that the old application is no longer needed.  What they will have failed to take into account is the way that Digital Storytellers use iMovie using a narrated voice track and still images compiled on a timeline. Even if ‘09 is capable it will take time for workshop leaders like myself to devise new workflows and update their user manuals.

It seems that iMovie HD is still on the Apple Support servers and can be downloaded by following this link. iMovie HD So get your copy now and keep it somewhere safe. You may still need it for a while yet – you may even prefer it.

KQED Updated Digital Storytelling Manuals

Tuesday, December 9th, 2008

KQED in San Francisco runs one of the best Digital Storytelling programmes in the world. Leslie Rule has just updated the manuals which include How Tos for the whole process of digital storytelling. They are well worth downloading, and they’re free.

While you’re on the site look through some of the stories told in their annual Coming to California competition. I find the more I watch, the better my stories become.

Mobile Digital Storytelling

A useful, comprehensive, if somewhat over long, presentation about a form of digital storytelling using a mobile phone and web based editing sites.

No – Wi Fi, t-mobile broadband or live blogging

Friday, June 6th, 2008

Here on the west coast of Wales at the UKs only digital storytelling festival I have connection to the outside world only through my iPhone. Access to the university’s wifi network is denied to all but staff and students, t-mobile supplies no signal to my broadband 3g dongle and the nearest public wifi point is half an hour’s walk away. So my intention of live blogging events here is thwarted. So today we’ll continue to discuss the glorious possibility offered by connectivity, web 2.98, broadband, etc etc and it will remain theory only until I escape on the 7.27 train out of town tomorrow morning. I’ll just have to wait till then to blog from the train and bring these pages up to date on the journey home.
In the mean time I’ll continue to enjoy this festival of ideas and the good company of the delegates.

Resources for educators, parents, innovators

Announcement: Jasons new book about digital storytelling and new media narrative in education – Digital Storytelling in the Classroom: New Media Pathways to Literacy, Learning and Creativity, is now available for advance purchase:

I have a lot of time for Jason Ohler. I heard him speak at the Digital Storytelling Festival in Sedona and he is the keynote speaker at DS3 in Aberystwyth in June.

Jason is the guy who says “If your kid is a bad guitar player don’t buy him a bigger amplifier. It won’t make his playing any better; his mistakes will just get louder!” The application here is – if you don’t have a story to tell buying a better computer or more powerful software won’t make your digital storytelling any better.
