Some thoughts on things I’ve seen for May 19th from 07:22 to 12:15:

  • Vicar’s shed for ex-cons – Yorkshire Evening Post – This is one of the stories I recently recorded at a workshop for the Yorkshire and Humber Faiths Forum.
  • What does social capital have to do with digital inclusion? : Connected Communities – A chance to participate in this event online. Storytelling is the heart of digital inclusion. The means to tell your story are secondary to knowing what you want your story to say.
  • Video tools list for journalists – Jumpcut is closing down. Yahoo bought it about 18 months ago and now they’re pulling the plug as “part of the ongoing prioritization efforts at Yahoo!”. So I went on a search for other sites that offered slideshow and video editing services. None appear to be as versatile as Jumpcut, but there’s a list here if you want to plough through and give them a try. If you find one that suits the digital storytelling process come back here and comment. After a quick browse through the list Movie Masher appears to be best suited.
  • 7 Minutes to Reinvent the Internet – The web has turned advertising principles on their head. The money is flowing in new directions and who knows where it will all end up. Seven people look into the not too distant future to suggest how advertising can be reinvented to fit the internet. Whilst these presentations are largely about making money, the lessons about how people use and experience the internet are valuable to all content creators.

Something borrowed, something green …

This story was inspired by a car key fob from the magic story bag

I borrowed a hundred pounds from my grandma to buy my first car. I don’t know why she was so willing to lend it to me. Perhaps, to her, it wasn’t a lot of money. For me it was a fortune – in 1968 my monthly take home pay at the BBC was £39/12s/0d (£39.60).

I looked in the Yorkshire Post for the car ads. I wanted to buy from a garage – in that way I would know it had been serviced and prepared for sale.

Ford PrefectAt the wheel of a green Ford Prefect I drove carefully out of Bracken Edge Garage in Leeds. They had my £100.00, I had my car. It had been a year since passing my test and I’d driven very little since. Until now I had hitch hiked everywhere. Nervously I pulled out into the city centre traffic.

In the middle of a main road, the car coughed and stalled. Four lanes of traffic and one traffic jam piled up behind a green Ford Prefect.

I tried everything but the car wouldn’t start. I found a phone box and called the garage I’d left only minutes earlier. They towed me in and found a fuel blockage in the carburettor and the remains of an old rag in the petrol tank.

Two hours later I pulled out again into the same street – this time the car took me all the way home to Huddersfield.

Years later The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy immortalised the name “Ford Prefect”, but my hitchhiking days came to an end the day I spent my grandmother’s £100 on my own car.

Museum of the Person map
We invite you and/or your organization to endorse our joint call for Listen – International Day for Sharing Life Stories, on May 16th 2008. The day will be an opportunity for people around the world to gather in community halls, classrooms, public parks, theaters, auditoriums, as well as websites, email exchanges, and virtual environments to hear each other’s stories.

This is a great day to arrange a storytelling event and to join communities across the world doing the same thing. Watch this space for more news of a digistories event and put the date in your diary now.

There’s a blog too, updated with details of the latest events.

Writing lives/teaching lives

Thursday, April 10th, 2008

I found this on the writing lives/teaching lives blog:

Digital Storytelling « writing lives/teaching lives
When I began to read about digital storytelling, I had expected it to be interesting, but for some reason, I had not expected that the writing process was used in digital storytelling. I suppose that I did not see the connection between the two. Lisa C. Miller addresses this: “With digital storytelling, words and the writing process matter as much as ever. We still must take students through that process, from coming up with an idea to collecting information to focusing and organizing to drafting to revising” 173.  I figured that I would mention this just in case I was not the only one who is a little amazed at this pretty obvious connection.

Anyone who reinforces the need for good storytelling and writing skills gets my vote. It’s not an intellectual exercise, it’s just good discipline. Forging your story into a script also saves you a lot of time later. Once you have decided what your story is you don’t waste time processing images and creating sequences you don’t need.
